Ti or vi?
Level A1 · Unit 1: Hello! · Lesson 2: Hello and goodbye
Slovenian has two words for "you" when talking to one person:
- ti: informal, for friends, family, children and people your own age in casual settings.
- vi: formal, for strangers, older people, officials, and anyone you call gospod or gospa.
The verb changes too: Kako si? (to a friend) but Kako ste? (formal). Vi is also simply the plural "you" for a group of people.
When in doubt, start with vi. A Slovenian will tell you if you can switch to ti.
